A Portrait of Tombstone. After a lot of waiting around for the right light and not getting what I was hoping for on this morning, I knew my chances weren’t very high of getting many shots that I liked. I tried quite a few different compositions, trying to get different arrangements of the sky and the foreground, some with the lake in the foreground, some with the grass. I tried different focal lengths. Different exposures. But nothing quite captured the “portrait”-feel that I wanted. However, as I went through this batch of photos last week, I came across this particular composition and realized it was pretty close to what I was originally aiming for. Unfortunately, for all the shots that I took with this composition (except this one) there simply wasn’t much dynamic range. In some shots the clouds had put the whole mountain in their shadow and caused it to look very flat and featureless except for the distinctive jagged skyline. In others, there weren’t enough clouds, and the direct opposing sunlight caused the whole face to be too bright. But then, lo and behold! for this one shot—this one fleeting moment of 27 seconds—the clouds opened up in just the right places to create the depth that I wanted! I think it turned out alright, all things considered. So there you have it: my portrait of Tombstone. 😊(Full disclosure: Technically, I lied in my last post. There is actually one more photo I took and edited yesterday and realized turned out to be, I think, good enough to share. Culinary Tourism stole the show at #AITC2019! Yesterday evening we had pleasure of attending A Taste of the Nations, where an Indigenous culinary team made magic in the kitchen with top chefs Bill Alexander (Executive Chef, Gray Eagle Casino and Resort), Paul Natrall (Mr. Bannock Food Truck), and Joseph Shawana (Owner, Kūkŭm Kitchen). Collectively, they created an array of outstanding, land-to-table dishes that incorporated fresh northern ingredients. A true culinary delight!
